Two Marine generals lose their jobs over deadly Taliban attack

In an action unprecedented during 12 years of war in Afghanistan, the commandant of the Marine Corps is firing two top generals for failing to protect troops and their base in southern Afghanistan from a Taliban attack.

Marine Commandant Gen. James Amos, has agreed to a finding that Maj. Gen. Charles M. Gurganus and Maj. Gen. Gregg A. Sturdevant "did not take adequate force protection measures" at Camp Bastion last year, the service said on Monday.

On September 14-15, 2012, Taliban fighters got through an unguarded part of a fence and engaged in a long running gun battle with U.S. and coalition forces.

Two Marines were killed and eight other personnel were wounded. Six aircraft were destroyed by the Taliban, the largest loss of Marine aircraft since the Vietnam War.

Why are US Marines being sanctioned for a lack of security at a British military base?

Probably because they can be. On November 5, 2008, logic, reason, and sanity went out the window. Everything has changed, nothing is as it was before. Up is now down, down is now up. Wrong is now right, right is now wrong.

More good generals that barry wanted out of chain of command for his future assault on U.S. citizens? A setup perhaps for that excuse?

And yet, no one is held accountable for those killed at Benghazi.

Amos is losing his mind. How do you fire the air component commander that doesn't have operational control of a unit at an allied run base for their force protection measures?

I think the fallout from his illegal actions in the Taliban body urination deal will lead to his departure. That is making national news again as one of the JAG lawyers is seeking whistleblower protection and was then retaliated against. They ordered him to take a psych eval. The USMC isn't the Stalinist USSR. You can't throw your dissidents into mental hospitals.

“Britain’s Prince Harry was with his Apache helicopter crew at the time of the attack but was moved to a secure area, officials said at the time.”

Outrageous. We are living in a world gone mad but at least Harry is safe.

Why is it that these generals are fired when the Pentagon do not allow soldiers to carry weapons on bases even located in combat areas? Rules of engagement prohibit taking aggressive action even when attacked.
Maybe we should be holding those in the Pentagon and the White House responsible for unnecessary deaths of our troops.

And yet, no one is held accountable for those killed at Benghazi.

And just like all embarrassing events under Obama's watch, and believe me this attack was an unmitigated disaster, the press hardly covers this event. If this were Bush, the endless barrage of the war not going well, US FAILURE would be all the headlines- as well it should.

Wrong. This had nothing to do with cleansing generals for political reasons. They needed to go. It is called accountibility. It's about being a Marine. 6 aircraft and 2 Marines dead. Somebody had to answer for that.

I hear people talking that it wasn't the Marine's responsibility. WRONG. Marines are in charge of the security of their flight line, end of issue. It is no different from the base (in AFG) that I'm on. Security doesn't get sub-contracted out to a NATO partner.

Maybe the generals could have survived with just 2 Marines dead. But 6 harriers is an entire composite squadron. Harriers are expensive, and losing them on the ground is untenable. The taxpayers should respect this move. Someone had to pay, and quite frankly, this is a good move by Gen Amos: it'll wake the other generals up.

Within all branches of the military there is a very strong push to eliminate those officers that do not support the progressive agenda. I believe the term is ‘purge’. Russia had them as did China.
