Some dementia, probably. And it's really regrettable; I take no joy at all in resenting him now, or with the expectant harsh judgment of history.
It did't have to be this way; I think he's some sort of iconoclast or someone who doesn't want to be a member of any group that will have him. Anyway, it's impossible to make sense of the irrational.
