(Reuters) - The White House will send a group of top officials to Detroit on Friday to offer millions in assistance for knocking down empty buildings, hiring firefighters and adding buses to the city fleet, as the city struggles after filing for bankruptcy.
The federal aid has been tapped from a variety of existing programs and is part of a patchwork of grants complementing investments by the city, state and private foundations.
"We're going to continue to support the efforts under way in Detroit and ensure the federal government is an active partner in supporting the revitalization of the city," said Gene Sperling, director of the White House National Economic Council, who has led federal discussions with Detroit on how best to help.
Sperling and cabinet officials will discuss the plan at a meeting with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the city's emergency manager Kevyn Orr, members of the Michigan congressional delegation and other leaders.

Now the rats can build thier section 8 utopia like communist china, food stamps, free phones, welfare, social security, disability, unemployment, free transportation and now free housing. Dont it just make you warm all over
Halloween coming up. Don’t they always have a rash of ‘urban renewal’ then?
Considering where the rest of the country is headed I can’t think of a better test bed for conservative ideas on how to correct the problem.
Silly. You’re not supposed to ask logical questions.
Unemployment? That would assume they actually work.
“Urban Governing” at Its Finest.
70 years of LIBERAL economic disinvestment and social destruction will now be addressed by bulldozers and food stamps. This is the RAT the model for every city and municipality in the US. Where is the Republican outrage? We need a new party.
The story is pretty manipulated anyway.
The fact is that this was reported several weeks ago as $58 million given to Detroit along with a couple hundred million given to dozens of other cities around the country for the same types of things.
The private money was being given anyway and had nothing to do with the government despite anything the administration claims. The simple fact is that the private sector is doing the heavy lifting with the administration grabbing credit.
I’m a little surprised Obama hasn’t claimed credit for the new bridge which Canada is paying for.
