During WWII about 34 million people that served in the Soviet Army. Included in that number are 800,000 women, 1,000 of which were trained as snipers.

Yes, they served in any possible combat role (with the exception of navy) but it proved a total failure most of the time. Snipers, pilots and field medic were a few barely fit for their roles.
