That’s a pretty fair assessment of how any politician would view the correct course of action. I’m glad they voted as they did, but I’m under no illusion they meant well.

The GOPe is being slowly exposed to an ever larger portion of the base.

Correct. In the beginning, the GOP took part in the negotiations. It was only after the GOP decided on a strategy of not negotiating anything that they withdrew

The individual mandate type of national healthcare originates in the GOP. The dems wanted a single payer system, like medicare. There are many reasons why the leftwingers are less than thrilled with Obama, including the fact that he didn't try to push a single payer system.
