Further, I would posit we have been at war with the Muslims since at least July 25, 1785 with the Muslim seizures of the schooners Maria and Dauphin and the decade long imprisonment of their crews. However, the case could also be made of the earlier Muslim pirate seizure of the Betsey in 1784 even though we "settled" that with the diplomatic help of Spain.
When we haven't been formally at war with them in the interim since, they have been at war against us continuously in various ways.
There is no "peace" with Islam - unless you are a Muslim. Or dead. This latest 20 year stretch has simply been the most recent chapter and one we would like to put behind us but will be unable to.
