30 years ago, we were all bellyaching that we wanted Law and Order, and Criminals Locked Up. In doing so enabled the new police state, with a communist at the helm.
Yeah, it really started with Nixon 40 years ago, but yeah, we are reaping the overflow from the results of this. Not all cops are bad, but I can see wh there is apprehension among the people. The action of few/some cops do earn them the derogatory term "pigs" and this is not good. I thinkwe need to get rid of zero tolerance and minimum sentencing. Yes, sometimes the punishment can be too lenient but that is better then punishing the innocent or handing out a harsh sentence for a minor crime.

Yes, sometimes the punishment can be too lenient but that is better then punishing the innocent or handing out a harsh sentence for a minor crime.Sentencing is an entirely different issue from policing. Police are supposed to handle legitimate arrests; not act as judge and jury, and not make up their own laws to suit local overlords, as they do when arresting pro-life demonstrators but not abortion demonstrators, or in this case, a citizen asking questions at a public meeting.
Secondly, your idea about letting some criminals go rather than emprisoning some innocent people is done all the time, particularly when it comes to child sex abuse; and the criminals go on to murder or utterly ruin the lives of many more children. So it's not a solution. DNA testing and by-the-book evidence gathering gets us closer to a solution.
