Semecha Nunn tried hard to talk about her 3-year-old grandson, one of 13 people shot as neighbors played basketball in Cornell Square Park in the Back of the Yards Thursday night.
"They need to stop, they need to stop," Nunn said, the last word coming out as almost a shreik as she closed her eyes and collapsed crying.
Witnesses told police a gray sedan pulled up to the park around 10:15 p.m. and two men started firing in the 1800 block of West 51st Street. "I think it was like an AK," said one neighbor. "Man, it was a lot of shots. Man, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. A little boy got hit in the face."

Is it possible to be horrified any more about anything that happens in Chicago like this? After awhile it becomes background noise.
So, more midnight basketball programs or less?
I’m trying to figure out why this 3 year old’s family had him at this place at 10:15 p.m. In the story it says that there had been shootings there many times in the past. I do know however that some folks don’t have very nice places to live and so end up on the street, in pocket parks. I get that. I just worry about this kid for more than his physical injuries.
And why in the hell did they have a 3-year-old out at 10:15 p.m. in a park in a violent part of that rancid city?
That was only rhetorical... it’s Chicago.. those people do stupid crap like that...
These people are not like us they don’t put children to bed at a normal hour. These children are just welfare checks to them god knows how man the parent had and how old the parent is?
Three year old in the park at ten oclock at night.
Thats NOT how to raise a child.
Bad enough just giving him such a screwed up name.
But....but......I was told Midnight Basketball was the cure for all that was wrong in Da Hood.
“Forget it, Jake, it’s Chicago.”
We’re not supposed to expose liberal statements such as the need for midnight basketball, and then ask why there was violence at a midnight basketball game.
But....but......I was told Midnight Basketball was the cure for all that was wrong in Da Hood
That’s the problem....they started too early.
If it was after midnight, it would have been fine.
Rahm-bo will take care of things.
Emanuel also released a statement this morning about the Back of the Yards shooting. “Senseless and brazen acts of violence have no place in Chicago and betray all that we stand for. The perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I encourage everyone in the community to step forward with any information and everyone in Chicago to continue their individual efforts to build stronger communities where violence has no place,” the statement reads.
Wow. “These people are not like us” How is that approach helpful at all? Each individual is exactly like me in more ways than I can count. That however does leave me free to criticize choices and culture but a 3 year old doesn’t choose any of that.
Well what else would someone expect at a midnight basketball game?
“I think it was like an AK,” said one neighbor.””
They have a Democrat Senator for a Neighbor??
A politician like Durbin will orate angrily against the atrocity a thousand miles from his district, and sharply criticize those who live there.
However, the SAME invective aimed at the perps who actually live in his home district could cost him (gasp) VOTES.
Votes are more important than the lives of the innocent.
The shooting at the Navy Yard, horrendous as it was, is really just a typical Chicago weekend. I’m looking for Durbin’s sermons about that.
The article was so full of alphabet soup names that I couldn’t come close to pronouncing that I just gave up reading. Has there ever been a midnight basketball game in da hood that has had a good ending?
that’s strange!! i was sure guns were outlawed in Chicago. there must be some mistake.
