Cracks found in vent pipe at Fukushima plant

The people in charge of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant say they've found cracks in a steel framework that supports an unused ventilation pipe. They relied on the pipe for a period of time to release dangerous vapors created by the 2011 accident.

Officials at Tokyo Electric Power Company say workers on Wednesday discovered the cracks and cuts at 8 places in the buttress about 66 meters above the ground.

If it is unused, why should this be a concern?

Because it’s 400 feet tall, and could fall down.

Better wear your hard hat.

At least it’s not a vent in a crack pipe.

They relied on the pipe for a period of time to release dangerous vapors created by the 2011 accident

If it falls, it will expose whatever is inside the pipe and its base, which can be highly radioactive.

Could be beta, but I doubt it. Can’t spend much time around that! Best to blow the frame near the bottom and control the fall, then drag it into the sea. :)

Ooops.

M 5.3 earthquake rocks Fukushima

'The epicenter was also about 50 km southwest of the damaged Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Station, which was crippled by the major quake and tsunami in March, 2011.

The Japan Meteorological Agency, which put the quake at magnitude 5.8, said no tsunami warning had been issued.'

Ok, so this was BEFORE the 5.3 earthquake today. IOW, Mother Nature tested it for them. Since it didn’t fall on anyone’s head, I’m guess by TEPCO’s standards, it passed with flying colors. By everyone else’s standards the whole plant has failed miserably.

Just what “dangerous” gases were they releasing and why? Was this some of the radiation that ended up in the milk and soil? How soon will we all be glowing in the dark?

Indeed it will go on for decades. And the lives of the people exposed to all the radiation as well, and the lost property values, lost industry, lost home.

Way too much risk for any conservative to support nuke energy. At Fukushima the risks are right out in the open and sitting at the base of a vent pipe that may fall over.

I can tell a plumber didn't write this.

Pipe; or pipe supports; oh, well it's all up in the air....

Any reaction from the good folks there in Japan?
