Washington -- The Centers for Disease Control on Monday confirmed a link between routine use of antibiotics in livestock and growing bacterial resistance that is killing at least 23,000 people a year.
CDC Director Thomas Frieden called for urgent steps to scale back and monitor use, or risk reverting to an era when common bacterial infections of the urinary tract, bloodstream, respiratory system and skin routinely killed and maimed.
"We will soon be in a post-antibiotic era if we're not careful," Frieden said. "For some patients and some microbes, we are already there."

oh bull hockey
this is more of the food control garbage this administration is trying to foist on us
Big Pharma shakes hands with Big Farmers. A pact made in hell.
We can trust Big Ag because no Big Business has ever lied to us ... ever.
You mean this is another plot to take your guns away by the commie/nazi/muzzy/hippy/scientist/running dogs?
guns?
No, meat
Somehow, the Republicans and the Tea Party are at fault! I’m sure of it!!!
What you’re saying— I think— is that antibiotics increase meat production in cattle. The antibiotic used are the oldest and most common.
The real cause of anti-biotic resistance— the AIDS epidemic, the resurgence diseases like tuberculosis, unmonitored treatment of irresponsible patients, uncontrolled immigration, and declining R&D by pharmaceuticals— can’t be discussed.
Farmers and ranchers are the culprits of last resort.l
My sister died because anti-biotics were useless for her. A few months ago I had a bad tooth infection and was prescribed penicillin. It had always worked in the past but didn’t this time. The infection just kept getting worse. Luckily my dentist found an anti-biotic that did work. So don’t try to hand me that crap that anti-botic resistance are just govt scare stories. Are you a cattle farmer?
Oh I too almost died from pneumonia being treated to no avail with Biaxin, so yes, I am familiar with the problem. What I am questioning is the lack of connection between that issue and the purported cause-—meat.
Evidence is a little emaciated to say the least.
Nope, I am not a cattle farmer and don’t know any either.
Sorry to hear about your loss and especially how your sister died. What a tragedy.
bingo!
wow, so by your lil chart there, people should not be allowed to take antibiotics either because it encourages the spread of drug resistant bacteria...........
you must be one of those organic food nuts, but has anyone ever told you that “organic” food is absolutely filthy with all kinds of manure loaded with bacteria (non-chemical fertilizer) and insects?
I do not prefer “organic” filthy food.
Nobody wants to talk about the antimicrobial infused plastic children’s toys/products that are now inundating bacterial petri dishes known as landfills.
oh you forgot to mention people refusing vaccinations and immunizations............
It would be much better if we developed resistance to what you are calling “filthy” lol
These near sterile living conditions that most of the first world practices... with cleansers that also purport to be anti bacterial, do not allow the body to develop its natural defenses.
There was also a period of decades where Drs would placate patients by prescribing them antibiotics for simple colds(which are viral).
Prophylactic use of antibiotics is never beneficial, but it has become the norm for corporate farming. Such use creates resistant strains as surely as specifically culturing them. Add that to the standard practice of overprescription with the patients not following their regimens, and you end up with systemic problems.
All the R&D in the world is not going to fix stupid.
well we do live in a clean environment, if you have ever traveled outside the US, you can see our environment is really clean and nice
