If Assad goes, the vacuum will be filled by militant lunatics, as was the case in Egypt. Besides, if we insert ourselves every time Muslims come to blows, we’ll never leave the Middle East.

Who would have thought, after we helped the Afghans hold off the Russians with billions of dollars in training and weaponry, that 15 years later, we'd be spending $100b a year there fighting the same Afghans?
