Clearances are SUPPOSED to be reviewed every couple of years and anytime there is a change in access requirements. Not sure that is happening with the backlog of clearance requests.

When (early 1970)I did security checks with department of defense national agency check center it was assumed you would lie about derogatory information. Therefore, you family, friends and especially enemies were interviewed, and secondary people to interview were derived from those folks. Yes we learned of arrests and suspicions, and looked for derogatory patterns of behavior. This guy would have raised multiple red flags and would not have been recommended for any clearance back then. How times have changed. .

Your clearance is good for 5 years. The process is supposed to start the month before your expiration date. However, your clearance will remain active during the process which could stretch out another 6 months to a year.

Actually, SECRET clearances are only reinvestigated every 10 years, and TS clearances every five years.

14. How often is a security clearance renewed?
