As reported last night, "anti-Obama rhetoric" was one of the criteria the IRS used in some cases to flag nonprofit applicants for further scrutiny.
Now, a congressional investigation reveals that the IRS undertook the targeting scheme as a result of perceived pressure from Democrat politicians, according to a report in the Washington Times titled "IRS officials thought Obama wanted crackdown on tea party groups, worried about negative press."
And at least in some quarters, no doubt the mission was eagerly accepted -- the congressional report notes that there are emails between staffers writing derisively about the Tea Party.
According to the congressional staff report, the pressure began with President Obama's attack on the Citizens United decision; apparently, the report details emails between IRS officials (and interviews with them) that make it clear they were aware of the political pressure to act.
Indeed, according to the Times report:
None of this should come as any surprise given that we were already well aware of the political cross-pollination between The White House and the IRS -- Stephanie Cutter attending White House meeting with the IRS, the potential involvement of White House counsel Bob Bauer, and the like. We already knew that (as noted here on September 6), even as conservative groups were being harassed, the IRS and DOJ were actively aiding and advising pro-Obama non-profits. And that Lois Lerner colluded with a staffer at the Federal Elections Commission in an effort to assist a partisan Democrat agenda.
Above all, the staff report helps to connect the dots. Ultimately, it seems to confirm a theory I offered back on May 13:
The best way to fix a broken system is to SHUT IT DOWN, and THEN fix it.
Newt SHUT DOWN the US Federal Government in the 1990s and it WORKED!
The Liberal Agenda Media and the Democrats boo-hooed to this day, but Newt achieved success.

The only way to force a spoiled brat to behave is to punish, punish, punish.
The worst punishment that a Democrat, or RINO can imagine is to take away their ability to spend our tax dollars.
The best way to do that is to shutdown the non-essental parts of the US Federal Government, starting with mothballing Air Force One.
Not ALL politicians. Only Obama and a limited number of RATS (Reid, Chuckie-Cheese Schumer and Pelosi.) and they were still breaking the law regardless.
I get it. Obama WANTED these groups targeted but he didn’t SAY he wanted them targeted. It’s not his fault the IRS THOUGHT they could read his mind.
And what happens to a democrat involved in this? In Stephanie “I smile to hide my anger” Cutter it means a TV show on CNN.
“Perceived” threat is the new cover story to shield those politicians responsible.
“Those rogue IRS agents did this on their own, we didnt order it!”
Kind of like those stories about the rogue Cincinnati agents being responsible for the whole mess. Just one more layer of the onion.
Isn’t this the classic “dog whistle?” The “silent” call to action.
I have to disagree! For the RATs to “succeed” as they have, there have had to be a lot more culpable than those few you mention. There's an old addage “ when you raid the whore house you take the piano player too.” Sure seems to me to fit here. The needed housecleaning is very broad. The “enablers” need to be held to account along with the “instigators” if we are to survive as a country.
There was no perceived Pressure, the pressure was real and coming from Chuck the Schmuck and the Baby Diaper boy Al Franken for two of them. I am sure there were more.
THE FOREIGNER is behind every scandal occurring in his administration. No one does anything without his approval. He is protected by the leftist liberal MSM because he’s black.
Eligibility Scam. Fast and Furious, Benghazi, IRS, NSA, Green jobs scam. you name it. They are silent.
How sweet....the IRS is going to fall on its sword for “O”!
REALLY? I’m supposed to believe that?
Thennnn...tomorrow, we’ll get a different explanation!
