Call me naive, but I read AB-711 and I don't see where it bans all lead ammo. I see where it restricts lead ammo and a fine is incurred but only if the ammo is used to take game or non-game species or in areas frequented by the California condor.

“...nonlead ammunition, as determined by the commission, shall be required when taking all wildlife, including game mammals, game birds, nongame birds, and nongame mammals, with any firearm...”

“...(h) This section does not apply to government officials or their agents when carrying out a statutory duty required by law...”

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140AB711

My read is that if (God forbid) I lived in California, I could still use lead ammo for self-defense unless the Dept of Game sets hunting seasons on criminals and defines them as game or non-game species.

I think that this bill is being hyped as doing more than the language actually states.

“I think that this bill is being hyped as doing more than the language actually states.”

Yeah, progressives never progress. It isn’t like we were promised that seat belt laws would never be used as a primary reason for stopping drivers or anything.
