Very smart move.
1. Israel backs Obama, in order to curry favor on Iran.
2. Israel is taking no actual action. However, the statement, damages Sunni support for the rebels. Thus a weakened Assad survives ensuring stability.

If Israel’s goal is to keep Assad in power, it is a smart move. If in fact they want him gone, it’s an incredibly stupid move, because no Arab country is going to want to openly take Israel’s side in any conflict. If Israel voices too much support for intervention on the side of the rebels, there goes the Saudi money.
