I have felt for a long time that the absence of Patriotism in elected politicians is the key element that has changed in our Politicians. Gone are the days when Democrats would rise above party idealism and take a stand for what is right with America.
Am thinking of the likes of Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman.
Reagan was so liked as he exuded patriotism and not only talked about it, but acted it.
This quality, epitomized by George Washington who refused to be king and instead embraced the foundation of a nation ruled by citizens.
That's an excellent point. Just as a mental exercise, pick any prominent Washington leader today, Democrat or Republican, and put said politician in place of George Washington at the moment when the new nation's leaders wanted to declare him king. Do you think Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, or even, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, or John Roberts would refuse? I don't.
