MOSCOW First, Vladimir Putin accused Hillary Rodham Clinton of inciting protests against him at the end of 2011.
The next fall, the Russian president threw the U.S. Agency for International Development out of his country. Then he decided civic groups that get U.S. financing must be foreign agents.
By the end of last year, Putin decided Americans had become unfit to adopt Russian children. This summer he decided to harbor Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency document leaker, despite strenuous U.S. objections.
And ever since the Syrian conflict began, Putin has thwarted President Obamas attempts to get the United Nations to intervene.
Saturday, Russian and U.S. officials agreed on a plan to remove and destroy Syrias chemical weapons, but Putin still shows no interest in dropping his support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad despite U.S. assertions that he is destroying his country.
Surely this describes a powerful Russian leader who enjoys nothing more than finding any opportunity he can to land a nasty sucker punch to Obama.

Putin is Russian. We've been at the brink of war with Marxist Russia for over a half century. It's natural that he might not like America very much.
But what's your excuse for your long-standing anti-Americanism? And what's your excuse for the pathetic, weak-assed B. Hussein Obama's anti-American Marxism?
I'd say you and Obama are just about on equal footing with Putin for hating America, hating our founding principles, hating our constitution, hating our Judeo-Christian heritage and hating our traditional America way of life.
Oh, wait a minute. At least Putin claims to believe in Christianity, God-given Liberty, equality and the fight against Islamofascism/terrorism. You don't.
Hey there, good lookin', whatcha doin' in 2016...? ;-)
Well, hell, who wouldn't?!?!
Well, certainly the Republicans wouldn’t.
Putin - Doing the job the Republicans refuse to do.
You are so sadly correct!!
Yikes! the reset button from the last term malfunctioned. Quick, someone send Kerry over to Russia with a new reset button.
“By the end of last year, Putin decided Americans had become unfit to adopt Russian children.”
Wasn’t that after cases of abuse were reported, and even instances where homosexuals had used fake names to get Russian children?
I don’t take it as anti-American, I take it as anti-Obama. I have no problem with that.
And Putin is right while Obummer thinks the Arab Spring has worked out just wonderful. In reality it's benefited al Qaeda and the MB and that doesn't seem to bother Obummer in the least.
International diplomacy and power games are not for limp-wristed metro-sexuals.
These WaPo writers don’t have a clue. Putin sees Islam as the biggest threat to Russia. He is not too worried about the US when clowns like Obama are in charge.
If his goal was to harm the US, it would have made more sense for him to draw Obama into the Syrian civil war and then keep arming Assad.
And by the way, the ban on the adoption of Russian kids mentioned in the article only applies to gay couples. Another reason for the WaPo to hate him.
Well, I agree, though I’m under no delusion that Putin is somehow on the side of the average American! NOT!
If all it is, is a claim, it's a hell of an expensive one. There are less expensive ways to put on shows than building 200 new Christian churches in and around Moscow and reconstructing that gigantic cathedral in Moscow which the commies tore down to build a swimming pool in 22 or 23:
Yep, and I don’t blame Putin one tiny bit for prohibiting Americans from adopting Russian children because of that. In fact, I admire him for that stand.
Hussein claims to be a “Christian” of sorts:
FALSANI: What do you believe?
OBAMA: I am a Christian.
So, I have a deep faith. So I draw from the Christian faith.
On the other hand, I was born in Hawaii where obviously there are a lot of Eastern influences.
I lived in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, between the ages of six and 10.
My father was from Kenya, and although he was probably most accurately labeled an agnostic, his father was Muslim.
And I’d say, probably, intellectually I’ve drawn as much from Judaism as any other faith.
So, I’m rooted in the Christian tradition. I believe that there are many paths to the same place, and that is a belief that there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people. That there are values that transcend race or culture, that move us forward, and there’s an obligation for all of us individually as well as collectively to take responsibility to make those values lived.
And so, part of my project in life was probably to spend the first 40 years of my life figuring out what I did believe - I’m 42 now - and it’s not that I had it all completely worked out, but I’m spending a lot of time now trying to apply what I believe and trying to live up to those values.
AND he is not only embarrassed to speak of Christ, he admits he is the type of “Christian” who thinks that Jesus was only a “great teacher”:
FALSANI: Who’s Jesus to you?
(He laughs nervously)
OBAMA: Right.
Jesus is an historical figure for me, and he’s also a bridge between God and man, in the Christian faith, and one that I think is powerful precisely because he serves as that means of us reaching something higher.
And he’s also a wonderful teacher. I think it’s important for all of us, of whatever faith, to have teachers in the flesh and also teachers in history.
AND he ducks the question whether he has ever been a member of another faith (e.g. Islam):
FALSANI: Have you always been a Christian?
OBAMA: I was raised more by my mother and my mother was Christian.

Which leads to an interesting question: if Obama rebuilt a church or two, and came out against gay marriage, would FReepers support him? If not, why not?
In Russia, politics and nationalist pride are the basis of Putins anti-American turn
What, pray tell, is the basis of the Washington Post's historical anti-American turn?
Then I read Jim's comment, and I'm late and short, again, drat.
Don’t worry. He won’t.
I'd say Putin doesn't dislike us for all of that stuff - he dislikes us because we're responsible for the collapse of Russian empire (i.e. the loss of the Ukraine, the various stans, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Baltic states and the Warsaw Pact, which might eventually have been annexed to Russia), and we've continued to knock down traditional Russian client regimes like so many dominoes, with the most recent victim being Gaddafi. At the time of Bush I's Chicken Kiev speech in 1991, I thought it was timid. In retrospect, I understand why he was cautious. The problem is that when you're dealing with the rulers of an empire armed with 20K nukes, you also have to factor in the possibility of them pulling down the temple over all of our heads.
At any other time, this would be cause for outrage. Under Obama, we are forced to agree with his sentiments.
That pisses me off to no end.
Putin IS a thug. Former KGB.
I really am beginning to believe this is a “good cop, bad cop” scenario.
