Well, it is in the deep part of the reptilian and limbic systems in our brain. It is where if there is a different tribe, group, species, if you will, that is not a part of your group or are unknown to you and your group, it is natural to be aloof and distrusting until it is satisfied they are not a threat to you or yours. If they post a threat, you rumble. It is a survival skill, hate to sound like a Clint Eastwood movie but there are two choices, "Quick or the Dead."
