Officials at Boston's Logan International Airport are apologizing for holding a fire drill, complete with smoke and flames, on the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The two hijacked jets that were flown into the World Trade Center towers flew out of Logan.

A fire drill today at Logan International Airport that sent smoke billowing into the sky was called dumb by Gov. Deval Patrick who lashed out at Massport for staging the event on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks all while grieving families attended remembrance ceremonies around the city.
I didnt know it was going to happen. Its just dumb, Patrick said of the drill, which TV news footage showed featuring heavy fire and billowing smoke at the seaside airport. The timing could not be worse.
Two planes that took off from Logan on the morning of 9/11 were used in the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center towers, killing nearly 3,000, including some with Massachusetts ties.
Massport apologized today in a statement, saying it understands that it may have offended many of those touched by the events of Sept. 11.
Safety and security is our top priority and constant vigilance and readiness is critical, the statement read, but the exercise should not have taken place on the anniversary of 9/11. The airport community recognizes the day with moments of silence, a service in the chapel, and a wreath at the 9/11 memorial.
Patrick said he has a tremendous amount of confidence in Massport leadership, adding, I have to believe they just didnt catch this.
I’m sorry. To do something this stupid has to be deliberate.
Government employees displaying their “smarter than we are’ mentality!
I hope it wasn’t done intentionally to upset people but goodness knows we’ve been betrayed by our government in the past including those instances you cite.
Sorry, rr, you are 180 degrees off on this, IMHO. What better way to commemorate that awful day and the brave first responders than to make sure we’re ready for the next time Al Qaeda tries something?
Out here in the Bay-airhead Area, October 17th (anniversary of the 1989 World Series earthquake, for those in Rio Linda) is Earthquake Awareness Day, complete with “drop and hold” drills in all public places that day. Heck, we’re thinking of where we were that day, why not remind ourselves how to deal with it for the next occurrence.
And, in both cases, earthquake and terrorist attack, it’s not so much “if” but “when”.
All those “world-class universities” and not a lick of common sense in the whole city.
Of course, it was Logan where the hijackers all boarded, wasn’t it?
I’m betting it was deliberate and someone somewhere laughed their behinds off.
The old ‘ask forgiveness’ rather than ask permission thingie.
The hijackers actually came into Logan via Portland, Maine. They didn’t have to be rescreened in Boston.
