(CNN) -- Even by MIT standards, says Tom Leighton, Danny Lewin was special.
"He was really exceptionally smart. MIT has a lot of really smart people, and Danny stood out even among that rarified environment," says Leighton, who was then one of Lewin's professors at the Massachusetts school's computer science laboratory.
That kind of determination drove Lewin throughout his short life. He was an American who joined the Israeli army and served in an elite unit, though he could have avoided the military altogether. He was a mathematician who could have had a stellar academic career but decided to jump into business.
Lewin died on September 11, 2001, at age 31. He was on American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to hit the World Trade Center, and was almost certainly the first person killed in the attacks on that horrible day.

Had to read the article ;-) to figger out why he was the first.
“According to flight attendants’ calls relayed to authorities on the ground, the first passenger to be killed was seated in 9B. He was stabbed to death.”
He understood Arabic and the Arabic mind, being Israeli. The article conjectures he might have been the first to react. However, given the deep hate of Islamists for Jews, they may have spotted him out and killed him for fun as soon as they had the chance. Islamists do that.
I remember hijackings where they gathered passports and killed people with Jewish names.
Robert Hayes, a friend and industry colleague was on AA 11.

Brave man. No doubt acted alone and was overcome by the jihadis.
“On any vessel such as an aircraft or ship at sea, upon which you and your team have attained full control of the captivity area, you shall begin collecting passports or ID cards”.
The order for killing passengers is thus:
1) Israeli Jew
2) Jew from any country
3) Pet(s) of a Jew
4) Close friend of a Jew
5) Someone who knows a Jew
6) American Imperialist
7) British Imperialist
8) French Imperialist
9) Dutch Imperialist
.
.
.
.
.
.
45) Any Christian
46) Any Muslim who converted out of Islam
47) Any Muslim not of your sect or political beliefs
48) Old people or invalids
49) Generally defenseless persons
.
.
.
.
60) Anything alive
.
.
.
90) Cadavers
Why does that offend you?
Well, I definitely come in at #5!
(Pet of a Jew? Huh?)
I had read that the hijacker slit the throat of one passenger on each plane to paralyze everyone else with shock and allow them to seize the cockpits.
Whether this man was an unaware victim or a hero we will never know, but God rest him, and everyone murdered that day, and comfort their families.
I don't think he served us in the military, I think they mean that he served a foreign nation.
Pet of a Jew, you know, dog, cat, parakeet...
LOL they give a damn about an animal the person might have? Now, if it was a pig, I might understand. But any animal?
Does the list then also include successively pets of those who know Jews? Pets of Christians? Do my pets need protection?
This just seems laughable, like a farce.
I think these savages are no joke though and should be killed when possible.
They are such animals that in 1986(?) they hijacked the Italian luxury liner “Achilli Lauro” and shot an American handicapped (wheelchair-bound) Jew in the back and dumped his body overboard. His name was Leon Klinghoffer.
This just goes to show what “heroes” and “freedom fighters” these scum really are.
I wouldn’t get offended. It seems to be human nature for the press to try to create heroes.
