Driving to my new job, it was my first day. Heard the first crash on the radio, then the second, then my fiance called me at work to tell me about the Pentagon. My first day at this job, we stuck to TV sets broadcasting the carnage, then were ordered home.

We were packing our luggage to head to the airport to catch a flight to Lithuania. Obviously, we didn’t go.

Our son was in South America on business. Took him nearly two weeks to get home.

Scary times.........and it will happen again.

I’m in Arizona so it was 6AM and I was listening to Hugh Hewitt; he had a morning show at the time. After the second plane hit, I turned off the radio and turned on FoxNews. My son was a flight attendant at the time and I couldn’t contact him, so I was beside myself until he called.

I was in disbelief as I watched the horrific images on the TV screen.

On vacation in Williamsburg, VA. Our vacation ended on Wednesday when we could not enjoy ourselves and wanted to get home to be with our kids.

US 169 and county road 42 in New Hope Minnesota, it was sunny and about 80 out.. I was driving a blue and wood grain 1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager and working for a courier company..

news can on the radio and I was so stunned I almost wrecked..

I have not forgotten the news of that day, the photos or anything else...

I could not tell you what I did the day before, or the day after.. but that morning.. I remember just about everything.

Heroes rise up to meet the needs and then quietly retreat when the need is filled...

Some never got to retreat..

God rest their souls...

Real estate office meeting when my husband called. I turned on office TV right before the second plane hit. Later after air space had been cleared, my husband and I took cars to get fueled up and there were big lines. People were out of vehicles talking, actually whispering which was weird. Someone said, WOW! LOOK UP and there in the sky was AIR FORCE ONE with fighter escorts. (Ohio). I still get chills thinking about it and will never forget that sight. An amazing sense of relief came over me, knowing GWB, CHENEY were the best we could have, and I am proud to still admit that today.

I was in my office and, coincidentally, downloading a patriotic screensaver. My sister called me to tell me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. The other plane crashed as she was on the phone with me. I went to another office where everybody was gathered around the radio. Flight 93 flew over our county. they sent people home from the local power plant thinking it might be a target.

What a terrible, horrible day. The fight is not over. We WILL prevail!

God bless those heroes of 9-11.

Where were you

I was across the river in NJ teaching an IT class. As an instructor I was busy getting the class started and on course for the week ... until the class became very uncomfortable. My phone was off. I had no idea what was going on until the first break. At the break, I checked my phone and had a voice mail from my sister. My brother-in-law was in WTC 7. The class muddled through until 11 am and I had to call an early lunch. Too many people had family unaccounted. I simply stated that we needed to break and come back at 1 pm. If anyone needed to take care of family matters they would be refunded. Otherwise, we needed to go on with class and not let the terrorists win. (meaning if we didn't continue with business at hand, they would have won by changing our lives ... and yes, I knew immediately it was a terrorist event.)

Everyone returned at 1 pm. The afternoon was filled with text messages (cell phones were jammed, but out of band text messages worked) with students finding their family members made it out safely. I didn't find out about my brother-in-law until a little after 7 pm. He was able to walk out of the city and he was ok.

The rest of the week was tough. I drove to class in the morning and was able to see the smoke from ground zero. Everyone attended the class and finished. We focused on the task at hand and didn't change the way we lived ... for at least that week.

Never forget. Definitely. Never forget the sons of pig whore’s religion that gave us 9/11, and the president who proclaimed it to be a religion of peace. Never forget these animals need to be sent back to whatever hole they crawled out of.

We were staying at the beautiful ranch of some friends, just about 10 miles from Jackson Hole. We had driven up from Albuquerque the day before, so were still pretty groggy when our hostess came upstairs to wake us and tell us to turn on the TV. Ever since that day my life has been divided into pre-9/11 and post-9/11.

I lived in Alaska at the time, but was on Coronado Island in SD for a meeting. We were all told to get home any way we could. I had to fly to get home, so ended up staying in SD for 9 days.

I was asleep here in Pacific Time. My wife was at an early morning doctor's appointment and called me - she was watching the later stages of it in the waiting room.

By the time I turned on the TV, both towers were down... unimaginable - I had stayed at the Marriott between the two towers three weeks earlier.

At home heading our for Dentist appointment when the first plane hit.
Dentist 5 min. away, asked if they’d heard the news, and they hadn’t, so they turned on TV.
They came back to my chair a minute later to say a second plane had hit and it was terrorism.

I was here, on Free republic. Was getting ready for the day, having just gotten the kids off to preschool, husband was off to the base and I read this exact headline. Reading it again tonight made me jump.

I read on and as the realization of the situation set in I went downstairs to turn on the TV and I watched the second plane go in.

I watched and as the buildings went down I shook.

I tried to get through on the phone. Five siblings, grandmothers and aunts, my brother, who had worked there, but not then.

The phone was so dead. It wasn’t like in a storm when the power goes out. It was dead.

I finally got in touch with my fabulous and tough great aunt, whose late and senior husband had worked on Wall Street since 1910.

She asked, “what the hell kind of a world is this you kids are inheriting?”.

Later I spoke with another Aunt whose two sons had witnessed it from two different points. I told her my legs were just giving way. She said she could see the smoke from Rumson, way down the coast of NJ.

Then my sister, whose husband, a lawyer at City Hall, who was on his way back home out on Long Island, having called her to tell her he was turning around, “something very F U’d was going on”.

Other worldly things also happened.

Then, a few days later, I got in touch with a cousin, of the firefighting side of our Irish family. He said he was there when Pres Bush came onto the scene and, “what a shot in the arm that was! What a shot in the arm”, he said.

Then he said he’d have to buy a new suit. He’d have about 15 funerals to attend in the next week.

My brother said they weren’t saying if anyone was dead. Many families waited weeks finally giving up and sending the second son to go retrieve the car from the train station.

And that’s where it gets sad.

My sister told me that our/my boy next door was missing.

He was so full of life. Perfect family, wife, home, sons.

Two weeks later they gave up and sent his little brother up to the station to get his car.

We had twenty-two funerals in our parish, of the Catholic school we had grown up in.

Father had to hold 22 funeral Masses within two weeks.

What else?

Never heard a peep from hubby til around 6 PM. Comm out. From the moment the planes hit, the Ari Force was in. Not a plane over my backyard for the first time ever.

To me, that quiet was eeriest of everything I was seeing and hearing.

At home, just got kids and hubby off to work and school. Hubby called and said...turn the TV on...

....all the moms went and picked our kids up from school. We all cried together and held each other.

Trying to explain it to the kids was tough. The world changed that day and they'll never really know how it was before that. Post 9/11 is all they've known.

Strange, I guess. I was just out wrapping things up in the garden tonight and I heard the 10 PM Taps. I stopped and faced the music from Base and dropped everything else. It takes less than a minute.

Well, I’m going to the Mass I reserved for my dear friend and 911 victim, tomorrow.

I never forget.
