MOSCOW (AP) In a surprise move, Russia promised Monday to push its ally Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control and then dismantle them quickly to avert U.S. strikes.
The announcement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came a few hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Syrian President Bashar Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding the alleged use of chemical weapons by his forces by surrendering control of "every single bit" of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week.

Great gif. Thanks.
Well well. Can’t wait to hear the feckless/dangerous administration spin this one. And how will they explain this to their Saudi masters???
We have no leadership; it shows. They are getting slapped all over the international stage. Stupid voters.
We can send in Hans Blix to keep Asad honest.
In a couple of the months the nightly news will be showing footage of a warehouse with a bunch of guys standing around in lab coats and hardhats, some with “UN” on the side, watching pallets of 55 gallon drums being unloaded off a truck and [presumbably] sent to an incenerator.
Everyone will talk glowingly of how much safer the world is.
Meanwhile back in Syria ...
That was no joke! I have a contact inside the IAEA who said that Blix actually played that clip at a conference and said it was true: They only had the ability to write letters expressing their displeasure.
If its the UN watching, what could possibly go wrong?
That’s what I’ve been saying. And it doesn’t really matter if Obama chooses to bomb Syria. He will say that he had intel reports saying Syria was going to use gas again. The American press will back him up no matter what. They did for Clinton when he went bombing and Bill wasn’t really black.
I’ve agreed with Putin a number of times over the last few years. Way more than Obama.
Wasn’t there something about this ‘deal’ in last week’s postings?
Brilliant move by Putin. He looks like the peacemaker and also comes out tough given his comments as fully supporting the Syrians if the US bombs. Assad has nothing to lose by surrendering the weapons as Russia continues to be his ally and it’s consistent with his position his army didn’t commit the attack. It unfortunately saves face for Obama as you can be sure the press will play this as Obama’s notion borne from the discussions at the G20 with Putin.
It would be interesting if Syria tied their request for international control of chemical weapons to international assistance defeating the al-Qaeda affiliated rebels.
And when the UN compound is stormed/looted by Al-Qaeda rebels, Obama will blame:
- the International Community for not securing them properly
- Congressional Republicans for not authorizing the original strike he wanted.
Yes..pretty sad state of affairs when when the president of communist Russian is more credible than the communist president of the USA.
Putin is making Zero’s experience as a community organizer really show.
That can’t be, he may actually accomplish something. Unlike Obama who got one for accomplishing nothing.
That’s exactly what Assad will do. There’s no way he will give up any of his chemical weapons.
Pipelines are easily sabotaged.
What remained of Saddam's stockpile (that was transferred to Syria) probably came from the United States to use against Iran when Saddam was once a useful tool.
