2 Is the Catholic Church involved?

Good question. Based upon the U.S. Bishop out of Charleston, SC, who leads their Scouting committee, I rather doubt it, but some individual Catholic Scouters may be at the founders' convention. Two big clues as to who seems to be the most behind this are ...

1. Convention is being held in Nashville, TN - home of the national HQ for the SBC.

2. On Saturday special guest speakers include former Governor and Fox News Commentator Mike Huckabee ... Huckabee attended an SBC seminary but did not finish. He has served as a pastor in 2 (SBC?) Baptist churches.

My gut sense? They’re going to define Christian generously enough to embrace anyone who has put his trust in Jesus Christ to save his eternal life. That represents a pretty fair slice of Roman Catholics too. Fortuitously, most Baptists are actually allergic to denominational issues.

This is a side point only tangentially related to the Scouting issue, but in light of the question mark, I wanted to clarify Huckabee’s connections with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Huckabee’s college degree and his one year of seminary were in Southern Baptist institutions. He pastored Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Ark., from 1980 and Beech Street Baptist Church in Texarkana, Ark., from 1986 to 1992, both congregations being members of the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1989, Huckabee was elected president of the Arkansas Baptist Convention, the SBC’s state affiliate organization. In 1993 he was elected lieutenant governor of Arkansas after losing a race the previous year for a US Senate position, and he later became the state's governor.

Back to Scouting... this is a huge development, and getting some of Scouting's top leaders on board, including the BSA’s key lawyer, is a tremendous accomplishment. I definitely wish the new organization well.
