Military Revolts Against Obama Attack On Syria

Mideast: The administration's planned strike on Syria is increasingly opposed by many in a U.S. military coping with the scars of two long wars, a rapidly shrinking budget and soldiers saying we're "tired, stretched thin and broke."

That sentiment was expressed by an active-duty soldier with a rank of Sergeant First Class in an email to Rep. Justin Amash. The Michigan Republican has been receiving, compiling and tweeting emails from current and former service members now being asked to commit to an ill-defined mission with an unclear goal in support of rebels mostly linked to al-Qaida and other unfriendly interests.

"The message I consistently hear: Please vote no on military action against Syria," Amash tweeted. Most objections relate to the lack of a clear objective in striking Syria and the muddled line between anti-government rebels and al-Qaida-affiliated terrorists.

The backlash against boots on the ground or even wings in the air has exploded on social media. Many in the military are posting photos of themselves holding signs stating they'd refuse to fight on the same side as al-Qaida in Syria. The photos went viral, with one post alone generating more than 16,000 shares on Facebook.

"Our involvement in Syria is so dangerous on so many levels, and the 21st century American vet is more keen to this than anybody," Business Insider's Paul Szoldra quotes former Cpl. Jack Mandaville, a Marine Corps infantry veteran with three deployments to Iraq. "It boggles my mind that we are being ignored."

A decade of involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, with many of the rank and file seeing the fruits of their victories squandered by the Obama administration's precipitous, ideologically driven withdrawals, raises the question why we should bother about Syria.

I find it interesting that the only thing you seem to want to discuss about my post is my conjecture that the Middle East could become radio active for a half life of thousands of years. I hope you know there are nuclear weapons capable of doing this.

I thank you for your gracious recommendation of books that could increase my knowledge of nuclear weapons, but I already know all I want to know about these weapons and I didn't gain this knowledge from books. (Well, maybe a few classified manuals.) After Vietnam, I served most of the 1970s on U.S. Army Special Forces SADM Teams and I came away with a good knowledge of these weapons and their capability.

And now they want that pipeline across Syria to transport gas to Europe in competition with current Russian gas. Then throw in all the tons of gold that Syria has from Libya per Kadaffi (who was taken out) and claimed by Euro bankers in cahoots with the Saudis who want to be paid for the oil and you have a real quagmire for a ‘new world order’.

I think it is likely that now 0 is facing increased opposition that this will be a few Tomahawks to the desert. I don’t endorse that, but it is the option that will have the least damage done to America. The worst option outside of an invasion IMO would be for the US to eliminate the Syrian AF. Assad is winning and as long as he has a viable AF he will prevail. At any rate, after all the raving, lying and foot stomping by the prez and SoS, after this ‘intervention’ the war will grow more savage.

I read the calls and emails going in to Congress were 595 to 1, proportionally. THat says something.

And even some hardline dems are opposed.

The more the news comes out - plenty of people read Drudge - the more realize that supporting the “rebels” is supporting crazy and evil Islamists.

Remember FReepers and remind others that in the closing months of GW admin. they bound up the Iraq situation so there were few loose strings for Obama to have to deal with.

I hope that's the most it is, although I think it's too much. We are not the world's police, and it's not our job to take care of the ME, no matter how much the Neons and Dems and RINOs think it is.

I don't think a war with Syria would drag in Russia, but I do think it will drag in Iran, and we do not need more war, not with our military in its current state and most importantly, not with the idiots in Washington running it.

We are damn lucky that the neocons didn't get their way under Bush or we would have fought Iran and Syria while Iraq and Afghanistan were not stabilized. At times I wonder if Obama has some of Bush's idiots, who just thought "oh, we take out Saddam, and then everything will fall into place." Here we are, out of Iraq, and sectarian fighting is killing nearly a thousand people a month in Iraq. Libya? We intervened, Ghaddafi is taken out, and now Libya is a disaster. They want us to intervene in Syria, but they have no strategic plans if Assad goes down. We already know how Syria would pan out - much worse than Libya and Iraq.

The most troubling thing of all is not the Obama administration's lack of a strategic view of things, it's how many Republicans they've conned into doing their bidding.

Question. What amount of money are you talking about and where is it? I suspect Kadaffe in Libya was actually involved with more than 8 billion and if that is what you have documentation for it was Libyan gold, it was not a poor nation and not the gold of others that was being in play. Syria supposedly was a much safer play place. Kadaffi was terminated by the powers that owned the gold.

He planned sort of Marshall plan for Africa, tiered system where one country providing products and resources to those below the ladder. It was a way to bring meaningful market economy to Africa ravaged by dictators on the payroll of neocolonial masters.

There was a plan to build a network of small scale solar powerplants in the desert and export electical power via microwave link to Sicily.
