The woman whose opinion lawmakers are relying on to go to war in Syria is also a paid advocate for the war-torn country’s rebels.
On Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry encouraged members of the House of Representatives to read a Wall Street Journal op-ed by 26-year-old Elizabeth O’Bagy — an analyst with the Institute for the Study of War — who asserted that concerns about extremists dominating among the Syrian rebels are unfounded. But in addition to her work for the Institute for the Study of War, O’Bagy is also the political director for the Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), a group that advocates within the United States for Syria’s rebels — a fact that the Journal did not disclose in O’Bagy’s piece. O’Bagy is quoted in the Foreign Policy piece saying that the Obama administration’s June decision to openly arm Syrian rebels didn’t go far enough. ”Small arms and ammunition really only get you so far against airplanes,” she said then...In December, O’Bagy opposed the Obama administration’s attempts to designate al-Nusra — a powerful Syrian rebel group — as a terror organization because of its ties to al-Qaida.

Oh, I wasn’t exactly snowed, just impressed. So many of these consultants are just emotional and stupid... Cavuto did keep interrupting her; I am just withholding judgement on her right now. I just wish Cavuto or other interviewers asked more often where the paycheck comes from—like Sally Kohn, etc.
Well, watch her and listen. She is a first rate intellect. She may be wrong, she may be venal, but she’s no lightweight.
She’s an older version of the 16 yr. old in Kuwait who famously said she saw Iraqi soldiers dump Kuwati babies out of incubators....a total lie, we later found out.
We should have learned long ago not to believe everything we see on TV.
I just posted another thread; a Frontpage Mag article about her flip-flopping among other things.
I’ve known people that can present themselves very impressively verbally but don’t know what they are talking about or are lying.
So have I. A lot of them. And there is a difference between being impressed by someone with high intelligence and talent and not buying in to what they are selling. She’s not even lawyerly, which is unusual, I hate lawyerly and can’t really listen to them—but comes off as a sharp executive or professional. She’s also not smarmy or oily, though quite youthful.
But now she (O’Bagy) says… While traveling with some of these Free Syrian Army battalions, I’ve watched them defend Alawi and Christian villages from government forces and extremist groups.
Since when is the Syrian military attacking Alawi or Christian villages? The assertion makes no sense. Assad is Alawi and Syrian Christians have been ethnically cleansed by Syrian rebels, not government troops.
