Rim fire started by a hunter's illegal fire, Forest Service says

The Rim fire, which has burned into Yosemite National Park and threatened a vital water supply to San Francisco, was started by a hunter who let an illegal fire “escape,” the U.S. Forest Service said Thursday.

The fire was not started by a marijuana growing operation, despite rumors to the contrary, the U.S. Forest Service’s investigation unit and the Tuolumne County district attorney’s office concluded. The hunter has been identified and his name is being withheld pending further investigation, officials said.

The hunter has not been arrested.

The Rim fire began Aug. 17 near Jawbone Ridge in the Stanislaus National Forest north of the Tuolumne River off California 120. It was 80% contained and wasn't expected to be fully under control for another two weeks.

From the article: On Aug. 23, McNeal said the fire started in a section of the Stanislaus National Forest that is inaccessible by foot or vehicle

How did the hunter get there?

Good question.

Any Californians know the hunting seasons?
If so please post.

All sounds a little fishy.

I am a little suspicious.

Not that the Obama Administration would deliberately lie to make hunters look bad. I know that already. I am suspicous that they have lied in this particular case.

marijuana is the only thing I know that is in season all year long....particularly in California forests. They are home to mexican drug cartel growers and do a lot of devastation

In my 15 years in CA, I only met one hunter who was hunting wild boar.
I met LOTS of pot users and saw LOTS of evidence of illegal pot growing.

Possible Poacher?

Remember in the minds of DC beaurocrats, any one in camos and carrying a gun is an “Hunter”

Yep...poachers, I'd bet. The hunters I know are more careful than anyone when it comes to making sure campfires are thoroughly put out. Poachers don't give a sh*t about anything...that's why they're poachers.

From here it looks like both bow and rifle buckskin seasons were open. That doesn't answer the question about how somebody got back there.

JULY

July 13: Opening (tentative) A-zone archery deer season South Unit 110 and North Unit 160.
July 27: Opening (tentative) B-4 zone archery deer season.

AUGUST

Aug. 4: Closing (tentative) A-zone archery deer season South Unit 110 and North Unit 160.
Aug. 10: Opening (tentative) of general deer season in A zones South Unit 110 and North unit 160.
Aug. 17: Opening (tentative) archery deer zones B-1 through B3, B-5, B-6, D-3 through D-10.
Aug. 18: Closing (tentative) B-4 zone archery deer season.

I think Hunting season for archery is open for bear and a few other animals. However, here are my thoughts in general (I live right by this fire)

I disagree with the premise and wording of this article. It would be more accurate to say that a hunter sparked the flame, but the huge, out of control, catastrophic wildfire was CAUSED by years and years of mismanagement and neglect of the national forests in our area. It is probably fair to say that the fire problem was EXACERBATED (made worse) by the absolutely never ending regulations that limit reasonable logging on private land.

It is time to have a public conversation about the absolute disaster that our bureaucracy CAUSED by over regulation, lack of management and disastrous decisions on every level.

I want to know when the media and elected officials are going to blame the NRA for the endangerment of SF and a national park?

It will happen, mark my words.
