Defense officials said Tuesday the USS Mahan had wrapped up its tour of duty and left the Eastern Mediterranean. The Mahan had been scheduled to head back to the U.S. last month, but its deployment was extended because of the possibility of a military strike.
The USS Ramage, the ship due to replace the Mahan in the Mediterranean, remains in the region, as do the USS Barry, Gravely, and Stout. Officials said that four destroyers will be enough to conduct Tomahawk cruise missile strikes on Syria.
