Amazing, isn’t it? Our neighbors to the north and to the south get it. Energy independence is the key to economic development and yet the people on the left are doing everything to stop energy development here. Everything the left touches they turn it into ruins.

I doubt there's anything at all amazing, dowcaet. Shortages create opportunities for government to impose regulations and assume control. There's no such thing as a shortage of energy on earth; artifically engendered shortages, however, are as good as genuine shortage when it comes to serving as opportunities for state control. The point of state control, I believe is threefold:

1.) Control of resources leads to and enhances state control of people. Moderately hungry people are more susceptible to control than the well fed or acutely hungry.
2.) Control of resources leads to and enhances state control of economic activity. Closed markets are more easily looted than open.
3.) Control of resources results in the transfer of wealth from private to state hands, which may be the state itself, as under communism, or selected private hands doing the state's will, as under Italian fascism.

The only thing government consistently does well is look after the interests of government. What better way to feed, clothe, house, and enrich itself than by appropriating major, readily controllable sources of wealth?

Actually, if government were to content itself with a moderate share of wealth created in open markets, it would come out ahead of stealing larger and larger portions of wealth from people in closed markets. I believe it may help to bear in mind the measure of dictators since 1917 is the number of people subjected to mass murder.

Marxism is all about control and mass murder.
