I remember bands like the Beach Boys (this is dating me, I know) used to come on an hour late or so, just to build up the tension. Or unnecessarily rile up the crowd. Or maybe it was to mellow out from the last line they took so they could stumble on stage to adoring cheers from the restless and stoned masses?
