Living-Wage Bill Backers Make Final Push For Mayor’s Signature
Washington City Paper ^ | August 29, 2013 | Will Sommer

Posted on 08/29/2013 9:27:33 AM PDT by Biggirl

With Mayor Vince Gray expected to receive the Large Retailer Accountability Act for a signature or veto by the end of the week, supporters of the bill rallied last night at Ward 7's Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. Gray says he hasn't made up his mind on the bill yet, although statements from Deputy Mayor Victor Hoskins and threats from Walmart to pull out of proposed stores in the mayor's home Ward 7 point toward a veto.

Will that living wage be for 40 hours or the 29 hours to escape the communist claws of CommieCare?

If the communists are demanding a living hourly wage that is one thing but if they are demanding a living yearly wage AND a business is forced to reduce hours that would be one double hit batman.

Nothing like having to pay a higher wage and only get 29 hours of work!

Cloward and Piven at work once again.

I believe that entry level jobs are just that. Entry level. They were never designed to support a family of 8. Did anyone ever work more than one job to make ends meet? Did anyone ever work their way through college because they didn’t have a trust fund or their parents didn’t have the means to pay for it? The desire to succeed is born to some and others are lucky enough to have someone help them see the light and give them the drive to suceed. Others, they just want to have someone hand them free stuff. Look for some fast food places to shutter their places if this crap ever passes. How about “earning” a living wage and not being given one? Gotta love the lib mind set. NOT!

Is the “living wage” like the “living Constitution?”

Why not raise all wages to 10,000$ an hour?

That way we would all be rich, right?

“How about “earning” a living wage and not being given one?”

No kidding. They want to be able to drop out of high school, get a job in the back flipping burgers, and make that a career that pays just as well as the person who finishes high school, and then completes a training program in vocational school or community college. If the burger flipper gets paid just as much, why bother?

The fast food industry will adapt in a rational manner by automating more functions, modifying the available menu to fit, and cutting their number of employees in half. “Have it your way” may go away, but that’s better than paying $10 for a Big Mac meal #1. BTW, the people who are demanding $15 an hour to flip burgers will be the first to complain when the prices of fast go up dramatically.

These minimum wage hikes make sense if each employee can double the number of patrons. Otherwise its just a “gimme somt’in for nuttin’” shakedown.

Meanwhile, Congress continues to use - and abuse - unpaid interns for all sorts of purposes, including their own gratification.

The union I am forced to be a member of (closed shop jurisdiction, and the nature of my trade) has learned that we are being courted by another union.

I received a call the other day from the current union asking me why we were being raided.

I told them that we were tired of having our wages held down while the employer is guaranteed that they won’t suffer any change in the wage envelope because the skilled employees will be held back, while the porters, cleaners and other UNskilled labour received significant raises contract after contract. Where I am, we used to be in the upper-middle of our fellow tradesmen throughout the continent. We are now near the bottom, in a city of 400K

Then there was the union’s demand that we have all our stat holidays incorporated into our schedule, even though the staff LOVED having an extra 10 days of discretionary time off.

We and the employer finally worked out a way to do this, and all was well, until the union decided that (after 18 months of working the new schedule THEY demanded), the new schedule was invalid since they hadn’t approved it, and forced a KILLER schedule (2 days, 2 nights back to back, 4 off, then repeat ad infinitum) on us.

After a YEAR of that crap, we finally got back to a more amenable schedule, but according to “our bargaining agent”, there is no way in h311 we will get our stat days back.

People ask me why I utterly detest unions. I use this personal example.

those demanding $15 an hour are not worth $15 an hour or they would be making that already.

this is astro turf. The organizers of the insta-mob want higher wages so they can charge more for the same consumer products.

(ie your 20 gram ration of chocholate will be increased to 20 grams. Big Brother Loves Your)

Here in Indy, based on my viewing of local news video, it looked like 2 employees were actually “on strike” and 20 or so bussed in SEIU “demonstrators” with pre-printed signs.

The video even showed the SEIU purple shirts disembarking the bus in the pre-dawn darkness.
