elief was tempered with caution in Western Massachusetts on Wednesday as news spread that the Vermont Yankee nuclear power station plans to shut down late next year.
New Orleans-based Entergy Corporation made the announcement on Tuesday, citing the availability of cheap natural gas and the current economy, which has made it less profitable to operate a nuclear power plant.
This was an agonizing decision and an extremely tough call for us, said Leo Denault, Entergys CEO in a statement released to the media.
The company said it will begin shutting down at the end of its current fuel cycle in late 2014.
John Ward, chairman of the Gill Board of Selectmen, called the announcement the beginning of the end.
Theres a lot of hard work which has just begun, Ward said.
Ward, one of many people in Franklin County who have been working to shut down Vermont Yankee for years, described nuclear power as a failed experiment.
We dont need to split atoms to make electricity, he said. Its not economical.

I disagree. I think the way we do nukes is nuts. The technology is out there to make them much safer and yet more economical but as usual our government stands in the way of common sense achievment. Our governmental policies towards nuclear power have spent 30 years trapped by the logic of people who thought China Syndrome was a documentary. Kind of like burning food in our gas tanks or the millions of people who've died because some crackpot wrote a book claiming DDT kills birds.
No, they hate themselves and our nation and want to thrust that self loathing on us.
How dare we be a leader in anything, they killed the Nuclear Industry and Obama killed the Space Program two cutting edge areas, now we got ohgots.
And how dare we train our brightest to run the reactors in the Navy only to get great jobs running these plants with responsibility when they leave the Service. No SEIU dupes in these plants, so they can't have it, but they as they would love to have them ( SEIU ) installing Solar-Electric Panels on your home...
From the research I have done, their have been no deaths at a non-experimental commercial electric nuke plant from radiation.
Only 9 fatalities in the US nuclear industry since the 1950’s. Three or four from radiation in a experimental plant. I challenge any hippie to find something with a better safety record.
Look at the pictures in the linked article, the vast majority of the VT Yankee protesters are aging hippies. Very few youth as far as I can tell. Hopefully a good sign.
Vermont Yankee was one of the two best work experiences in my life. The station is run and maintained by decent, honest, and honorable people. They are some of the best people this nation has to offer. May The Lord bless all at and of Vermont Yankee. And may Gods Wrath fall on their detractors. Please offer up some prayers for the fine people of Vermont Yankee. They have certainly earned them.
