Don't know about Michigan, but in California shooting a fleeing perp is grounds for being charged with attempted murder. I think it's pretty much the same in every State.
Once the perp is no longer a threat, self defense becomes moot.
Doesn't mean he is less deserving in my book, but the law doesn't see it that way...unfortunately.

All the shooter has to do is say "I heard him say, 'I'm gonna go get my gun', so I shot him to prevent him from getting his weapon."
How does anyone know what the perp was going to do? He could have been running to get a gun or other weapon.

It used to be law in Texas you can shoot a thief in the back as they are leaving with your or your neighbors property.
