As the war drums for Syria get louder, let this thread serve as a repository for news, background, Tweets, photos, video, on-the-ground reports, etc., as was done recently with Egypt.
If Obama decides to go it alone, his own party will turn on him.
John McCain said,
and I found out today that not one weapon has gone to the Free Syrian Army from the United States. It has from some other countries in the region but not from the United States. Thats shameful.
Then see post 564 showing he’s a filthy liar!
...”If Obama decides to go it alone, his own party will turn on him”....
I’m not convinced he cares now if they do...even they have served ‘his purpose’...and why he has sheltered himself among the very few in his circle.
Maybe he knows he’s done...just a matter of time while all these accusations here and abroad are come full circle....he’s like a bull in a China closet...dangerous!
"Book report" on the interview (Brett Baier, Aug 26, 2013):
Notes (quotes and paraphrase from Elizabeth O'Bagy---if I use quotes, those are exact quotes):
"Who are the opposition? We have no idea who they are---a disparate, fractious group that has little in common and little values that are in line with US interests."
"To that degree, there are a number of groups, however, these groups have come together in various alliances and rebel formations, many of which are very much aligned with US interests and that are looking to implement a democratic and pluralistic vision for Syria---that is not kind of the more extremist line that many people have attributed the opposition to."
O Bagy then presents a map (NOT available at her org's website) that cleanly divides Syria into north/south (rebel/Assad, respectively) with the exception of the Damascus area in the south (mostly rebel [I question this])

A DIFFERENT map than presented on Baier prog.
"....There is very much a moderate and fully-functioning opposition that is operating out of the south and can be very much supported and has demonstrated its ability to do so."
Then, a graphic is presented (NOT available at the website): 5 columns labeled:
Northern Front
Homs Front
Southern Front
Western/Middle Front
Eastern Front
Underneath each column are various numbers of bars (the number of which presumably indicate weighting---my guess)
The bottom of the graphic has a key to the bar identification as follows:
Syrian Liberation Front
Syrian Islamic Front
Jabat Nusra
Separate brigades
From the graphic there are obviously more keys to the groups than are displayed in the graphic...SO, without those other keys the bar graphic is worthless, except to say that on the Homs Front and the Eastern Front the SLF bars predominate.

Pt2 to follow later...
White House Photographer Pete Souza just shared this photo of President Barack Obama taken today during a phone call with German Chancellor Merkel.
Hagel missed the memo:
I have said it on a number of occasions-If any action would be taken against Syria, it would be in international collaboration.
Wonder who are the leg men with him????
He is so far in over his head....and that’s an understatement...
Great pictures, CW, thank you.
There’s one thing I have to say about the chemicals’ photos on this thread.
I don’t know what the blue container on the launcher contains. If its a sealed WMD of some sort, the terrorists are very nonchalant about it. Not suited-up and/or masked. Are they ignorant or it isn’t WMD? I don’t know.
However the rest of the components are sodium solutions, vinegar and ethylene glycol. They could be mixing up incendiary charges or something close to napalm but by no means, nerve or bio WMDs, positively.
One of the components is what you dilute at 50% and put in your car radiator as antifreeze.
Just for the record, I conclude that except that blue cylinder on the weapon, the rest aren’t WMDs.
That’s my professional opinion, however, I’m not an expert in WMDs, not by a long shot.
It looks like the back room of a car repair shop.
Hagel is in Manilla?
