With over 2,000 religions worldwide this practice will tax the average readers interest. No, this did not begin recently nor is it taking the lead from Islam, as identifying people by their religion is well established in the Bible going back thousands of years (Abraham the friend of God, Moses the man of God, etc. and with any name ending in "el.")
