This week, President Obama is hitting the road to unveil his plan to "combat the soaring costs of higher education." His three part plan consists of connecting financial aid to school performance, supporting academic innovation, and making college more affordable.
His road tour and policy initiatives sound good in the nightly news cycle. They make for great talking points, but President Obama's plan does not address the fundamental reasons behind why tuition is rising. Both sides can agree that rising college costs are a big problem and burden for students. But more college subsidies and government aid will not solve the problem; in fact it is the reason why tuition is rising.
Over the past thirty years tuition has risen by over 250%, despite Washington continually putting forth new government aid programs and subsides with the attempt to cut tuition costs. The more money Washington puts into the hands of students only enables the colleges and universities to continue propping up the price of education.
When students have access to low-interest loans and government aid, colleges have no incentive to cut costs. Why should a college lower tuition if more students are able to pay with subsidized loans from the government?
Neal McCluskey, associate director of the Cato Institute said, "Basically the aid ensures that students can pay almost anything they are charged." Universities have no reason to lower tuition because they know whatever sticker price they put on a college degree, there will be students ready to take out low interest loans to pay for it.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 71% of all undergraduate students received some type of financial aid in the 2011-2012 academic year, up from 66% in 2007/2008. The average amount also grew from 9,000 to 10,800 in just four years.

I’m from the government and I’m here to help.
Well of course it will, there are decades of proof for this. /rhetorical
And, of course, no one will ask the question “gee, if the recovery is to be achieved by infrastructure construction, why will the ditch diggers, roofers, drywall hangers, and pothole fillers need a college degree?”
As is typical with liberals there is absolutely no continuity between positions. Sometimes the contradiction comes in the very next sentence.
Zero's plan is to collapse the economy and destroy the US.
Whenever private-sector product prices rise FAR less than college costs have, there’s always a “villain” —an evil, greedy CEO or the business as a whole— who is mainly responsible for screwing “working families.”
Notice not a whiff of such individuals or groups when it comes to “higher education” .... I wonder WHY ??
How in hell would Baraq Hussein mohammed 0bama know anything about the cost of college? He attended on a "Foreign Student" scholarship (Indonesia) and his other expenses were picked up by the communist party.
What we need is affordable college football tickets.
Heck, you can’t park for less than $10 these days.
Other than reaching the moon, name five things the feral government has done successfully in the past 50 years.
I can’t, either.
Free parking is a WHOLE nother issue.
Obama Energy Plan = Raises Costs.
Obama Health Care = Raises Costs.
Obama College plan = Raises Costs.
I sure hope he doesn’t have a sex plan!
If you want the cost to go DOWN, get the government out of it!!!!!
It's THAT simple!
The cost of ANYTHING, will always = (what people are willing/able to pay) + the cost of any subsidy provided by government and/or others.
Well he ever shut up!
say ... pickles!!!
If you get the government to subsidize the cost of a jar of pickles up to $1,000. Then a jar of pickles will magically adjust up to $1,001 dollars! (assuming the cost of a jar is $1 now)
Anyone who doesn’t understand that, doesn’t understand capitalism.
I read it first in an email (from Nigeria or Kenya).
Will the Affordable College Act save as much as the Affordable Healthcare Act?
We are a middle class family that pays full tuition cost, we can’t afford anymore to offset “free” college for anyone else.
Basically, this is Obamacare for higher ed. But the thing that should be scariest is that the government will control what is taught. Note that they will fund institutions that provide “value” and “quality.” Through financial incentives and punishments, they will now control what students are taught.
Leftist control of colleges and universities is already a problem, but this will make it much, much worse. And how much support do you think Christian and other religious colleges are going to get. Zip-Zero of course, effectively making them non-competitive and putting them out of business. Thus fulfilling another Obamunist dream.
Bass ackward is the norm for him.
