The Republican field in California’s competitive 7th District is poised to grow after Labor Day, with two prospective candidates planning to make announcements about the race.
Former Rep. Doug Ose, a Republican who represented a large portion of the redrawn 7th District from 1999 until 2005, is expected to make an announcement on his plans for the race after Labor Day, according to a source close to Ose’s campaign. The source would not confirm whether Ose plans to run, but other operatives in the Golden State say Ose is likely to enter the race.
Another Republican, Igor Birman, who currently serves as chief of staff to Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., is also expected to make an announcement on the race in September.
Republican Elizabeth Emken, who has waged two unsuccessful congressional bids in California in 2010 and 2012, has already announced she will challenge freshman Rep. Ami Bera.
Both parties expect the 7th District will prove to be one of the cycle’s most competitive House contests. Bera won the district by a slim 2-point margin in 2012.
But a three-way Republican primary could get ugly for the party. What’s more, the Club for Growth has indicated that it will likely get involved in the contest if Ose chooses to run.
In 2008, the Club for Growth helped defeat Ose in a primary when he attempted to come back to Congress. Ose ultimately lost to McClintock.
Multiple GOP strategists said a bitter Republican primary could hurt the party’s chances of picking up this seat. President Barack Obama carried the 7th District by a 4-point margin in 2012.
The 7th District is rated a Lean Democrat contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.

Oh Please, enough of the theatrics! I’ve lived here for all of my almost 73 years, and we have had bad times in the past ( like when Jerry the Fairy was Governor before). California will come back after it suffers the upcoming financial crash!
This is my district and I will be working to help whichever Republican seeks this seat.
Dan Lungren was probably the primary reason this seat flipped to D in 2012. I went to one of his townhalls and he was happy to spend a majority of the time talking about how he revamped the cups and utensils in the Congressional dining room but not too keen to talk about why he voted against National CCW Reciprocity.
Tom McClintock’s COS would probably be my first choice. Ose has a lot of baggage locally, with his Gibson Ranch deal.
I will be polling the candidates on a few issues that are important to me (2nd Amendment, Rolling back the welfare state, etc.) and picking one to work for.

Pal, I was going to UC Berkeley trying to get my ME degree when Edmund G (Fat Pat) Brown used helicopters to gas the students in Sproul Plaza. My wife worked with a woman who was their neighbor in SF. She always maintained that both of the Brown children ( Jerry the Fairy) and Kathleen were odd, but Jerry was by far the wierdest. He studied to be a Jesuit Priest before deciding that he could live off the taxpayers just as his father before him. We’ve had way too much “brown” ( as one of the campaign posters postulated, “if it’s Brown, flush it”) and we are surely in need of another Reagan. Maybe Ted Cruz will move to CA at the end of his eight years as President. In the meantime, stay safe!
Ose is a RINO, a definite no-go.

Hope you find the grass greener wherever you land. Just remember that how CA is now, wherever you go what has happened here will ultimately follow you. You may manage to finish your life w/o a “CA lifestyle,” but your kids won’t. I just hope you are alright with living the heavy lifting to the next generation.
I'm sure you meant "heavy lifting," but I won't be. In fact, they are the reason why I am leaving. I'm going to where my vote counts, where my kids will not have to worry about going outside, and where they can grow up to make a difference. My wife has family in Texas, and we aim to keep it Christian Conservative out there. Libs have been moving there and think they can take over there; but I'm the one following them - I plan to help make sure that they don't take over.
CA lifestyle? Way too expensive in all too many ways; not just money. Glad that you can afford it; you don't have to worry about what it cost anymore being you've lived so long.
