Modern youth logic: When you can make more money on the dole than fighting on the beaches of Japan/Europe, why fight on the beaches?

He would have been a little older—the invasion of Okinawa took place in April 1945, or 68 years ago...so he would have been at least 19, maybe 20 at the time.
