New Fluvanna principal sparks controversy (She's a Bully)

A Fluvanna County Middle School principal’s effort to instill discipline on the first day of classes has sparked a social media outcry among parents and an Internet effort to get her removed.

An online petition says Yardley Farquharson “yelled and screamed” at students, barred them from talking in hallways and suspended their bathroom privileges for the first and last 10 minutes of classes. Some 200 county residents had signed the petition by Wednesday afternoon, asking the Fluvanna County School Board to remove Farquharson from her job.

Parents referred to her behavior as bullying. Others, including some parent volunteers and school staff, said parents and students overreacted.

Farquharson and Superintendant Gena Keller have scheduled a meeting between parents and administrators for 5:30 tonight at the middle school.

“The first day of school … was not as smooth as we would have expected. The concerns that have been relayed have been addressed — quickly,” Keller said. “Dr. Farquharson met with students in grade-level meetings on Tuesday, the second day of school, to talk with them, answer their questions and give them more time to get to know her.”

The online petition described the first day of classes as “much more suited for a prison camp than a school” and asked that “parents of Fluvanna County sign this petition for the immediate removal of this administrator before irreparable harm is inflicted on our children.”

“The [first-day] delivery was made in such a way that it was demeaning to the kids. It was only the second day of school and already they didn’t want to go back. They were afraid the principal would yell at them again,” said John Flick, who started the online petition at www.change.org.

No sympathy for the parents taking Aid to Families with Dependent Parents.

In most cases the parents chose to send their kids to government schools rather than private or homeschool. There is more than enough information out there to show the truth about what happens in government schools. Those who choose to ignore it are either terminally clueless of complicit.

Principals were ALWAYS bullies when I was in school. That’s why we tried to stay away from them by not making trouble.

When authority figures are allowed to be bullies, the number of instances of students becoming bullies increased. It’s as simple as that. Fire the pig.

Have you been in a school in recent decades? How much learning do you suppose happens in a chaotic environment ruled by feral children?

Agreed. One of the worst things that ever happened to American education was mandatory attendance.

Yup...things sure were simpler in the "good old days."

Perhaps she’s the niece or daughter of Joe Clark?

>> That’s right. Side with the government union thug screaming at kids

I’m with Ben on this one. Little punks need more, not less, discipline.

Meh. The great thing about America is that you can claim whatever title you want, but can’t force anyone to refer to you by it. I don’t really care who styles themselve as a “doctor”, because I’m just going to call them Frank, or Leslie, or whathaveyou anyway.

Yes, but they primarily need more discipline at home, and I don’t trust the government to step in and try to fill that void.

We *did* nickname them, though. “Yardley Farquharson”... hmmm... I think we could work with that!

Reason 657-A why I love Walter Williams is that I’ve never heard him refer to himself as “Doctor”. Yeah, he’s a PHD in Economics. Headed probably the leading Econ dept. in the land, but he’s just “Walter”.

And, he could dunk!
