Keep thinking about it. Your idea certainly has possibilities! It would be nice to have something up and running ahead of a SHTF emergency. Maybe even broadcast the latest news of the day over any number of stations who do so over shortwave. TruNews.com is one that comes to mind, and Rick Wiles (the owner) was just donated a 50K transmitter on some island in the Caribbean.
Oops, make that a 50,000 Watt transmitter.
We also have to be prepared to go without the big out of country SW station, although being able to receive outside news and stuff would be great.
Just the HAMs being able to contact and communicate the data packets to each other and to upload them to local BBS’s would be a big step and the most important part of the process.
The local BBS could just be an older laptop plugged into some phone-line, right? Wouldn’t even need to plugged in except for test days until its needed.
Like I said for most FReepers it wouldn’t cost anything more than burning a blank CD. Assuming they had a modem, if not they can buy a really old computer just for the FRecs and keep it up in a closet somewhere until test day.
We could have a FRecs test every 3 or 4 months. Just an inconvenience for those who need to actually sacrifice their land line phone for a day.
It’s those with HAM equipment learning to send data packets to each other and knowing which FReeper HAMs to trust that would really be the pivotal part of the system.
