I agree with you. I am rooting for both sides to lose, but it seems highly unlikely that Assad would want something like this. Why? His forces have had the upper-hand recently and he knows he loses if Western powers get more involved. The folks calling the shot for AQ (the side we are supporting - crazy) don’t care about Syrians so I wouldn’t put this past them.

Syria is a mess. We should have stayed out of the Arab Spring, but Obama had an ego moment when he thought the seas would stop rising and peons in the Middle East would faint at his greatness. Go back and read the transcript of Candidate Obama’s big Middle East speech when you need a laugh. We are more hated now than we were before.

Yep, there was no real reason for the stronger side that has had the upper hand to do something like this.

That’s the most charitable thing one could say about 0’s Middle East policy. I think it’s likely that his support/instigation of the Arab Spring is the manifestation of him “standing with the Muslims.”
