A man who died in a shootout with FBI agents after kidnapping a 16-year-old girl and killing her mother and brother left money to her grandmother.
James Lee DiMaggio left $112,000 to Hannah Anderson's paternal grandmother after naming her as his life insurance beneficiary, according to the family's spokesperson.
He didn't know why but believes it was for the benefit of Hannah, the girl abducted by DiMaggio....
DiMaggio, 40, had been like an uncle to the Anderson children and the father's best friend.
DiMaggio named Bernice Anderson as the sole beneficiary of his employer-issued life insurance policy in 2011, substituting her for his sister Lora Robinson, the lone survivor of his immediate family, Spanswick said.
DiMaggio lived with Bernice Anderson for about two years before buying a house in 2009 in Boulevard, about 65 miles east of San Diego, Spanswick said.
Authorities found the remains of Christina Anderson, 44, and Ethan Anderson, 8, in the Boulevard house after it was set on fire.
DiMaggio's sister called Hannah's father, Brett Anderson, on Friday to tell him about the life insurance payment.
'They had a long conversation about their mutual loss, trying to make sense of what happened, and neither of them had an explanation,' Spanswick said.....
DiMaggio worked as a telecommunications technician at The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego. Spokeswoman Jan Coury also declined to comment.

And why not postulate that the insurance was for both Hannah and Ethan instead of just Hannah??? Is there something they are hinting at??? like the fact that DiMaggio was closer to Hannah and they knew it because DiMaggio was her biological father, thus explaining the DNA Swab Kit found at the scene.
And that story that he was leaving for Texas: It seems like he was currently employed at Scripps and going nowhere. So what's up with that???
Anyway no more need for Fundraisers for Hannah but grandmom will now have a big target on her back as she is now going to be hounded by her grandaughter for money.

Is the insurance payable if you are killed in the commission of a felony, or by suicide. If I was the insurer, I would claim that the cause of death was suicide by cop.

DiMaggio was Hannah’s dad? Or thought he might be? You have to send the dna swabs to the lab, you need a swab of mom, kid and dad. You don’t get instant results

Well at the Boulevard house that weekend everyone and everything was in one place — mom, daughter, dad, swab kit — and from there off to a certified laboratory for verification — which was probably the plan.
That makes him telling Hannah that he had a crush on her that much more creepy.
No — that makes her saying that he said that not believable like a whole lot of what she has said.
Citing her as a source for anything is problematic.

Sadly, I also think the dad acts weird.
I just had a horrible thought....what if the DAD set fire to the house AFTER he found out that he was NOT the father so the real father took the girl away.....I know...it’s a HORRIBLE thought.
One of her friends was interviewed, and apparently he said this to her in front of her friends. IIRC he and Hannah were in the front seat of a car and her friends were in the back seat when he said it.

I agree with you. Not sure why but I've had a funny feeling about this from the beginning. Some of the things the girl said on her subsequent web chat gave me pause. I'm not saying she was in on it and in love with creepy DiMaggio, but something just doesn't smell right with this whole thing. Wonder what law enforcement thinks behind closed doors?
One more thought: comments from the Dad during and after the abduction piqued my interest. I can't exactly put my finger on it, they were just strange, and not what I'd expect a Dad to say. Hmmm.
I think the mother knew that Hannah was DiMaggio’s daughter and he knew it, thus she trusted him and let him spend extra time with her.
I think her husband also found out and that’s probably why he was separated from her mother and living in Tennessee.
Was Tennessee dad paying child support for her??? or was DiMaggio doing that by among other things running errands for the family and helping them out with things.
Hannah seems to give Tennessee dad the brush off whenever together. It’s like he is a nobody to her and doesn’t pay any attention to him or listen to him. The other day he emphatically told the media that she would not be attending the fundraiser at the Boll Weevil, and then out of the blue she shows up with her girlfriends and makes her dramatic appearance as if to just make a liar out of him.
One can almost feel the attitude in her saying to him: “I don’t have to listen to you — you’re not my dad”.
And why would one of her friends have any more credibility than she does??? Right now her friends have circled around her and are protecting her as girls that age always do.
But let's look at the statement:
Was it just out of the blue or in response to her playing up the situation in front of her friends that this older man spends so much time with her and he is not related to her -- and rather than tell her that he is her father as the reason that he can't date her he defers to the age difference for why he can't date her.
As for a felony, IDK. I've never heard of a clause like that. My guess is that the DA is not going to try a corpse. Absent of a conviction, they may not have the legal ability. They could bring a civil suit, but they will spend more on the effort than it will cost to just pay off the policy.
The police said early on after the 13 phone calls came to light that they needed to determine the relationship between DiMaggio and Hannah.
I hope that what they meant by that they needed to determine if they were father and daughter.
That determination will go a long way to solving this crime.
Yes, those numerous phone calls gave me pause. I can't explain the feeling, just a gut instinct that something isn't right.
It’ll be interesting to learn what was in the letters Hannah wrote to DiMaggio.
Based upon the way they were described by the police, those 13 calls all appear to have taken place while Hannah was at cheerleading practice, after which he picked her up and drove with her to Idaho -- not returning again to the house down in Boulevard on the Mexican border.
If the above is true, then it means that after the deed was done at his house, she attended a cheerleading practice by herself and yet never said a word to anyone there about the trouble that her mother and brother were in.
