The new political drama Lee Daniels' The Butler takes its cues from a Washington Post article about a black servant named Eugene Allen who worked in eight presidential administrations.
That part of the story is essentially unchanged. The rest of the film, a movie stuffed with politics, historical re-creations and presidential imitations, is rife with inaccuracies that should be corrected.
Note: Some story spoilers ahead ...
President Ronald Reagan was indifferent to the suffering of people of color. Breitbart News reported this week that Reagan biographer Craig Shirley shredded this notion by detailing the president's legislative achievements and personal outtreach to his black peers. The Democrats helped pass the Civil Rights Act: This is more of an inaccuracy by omission. The film showcases how both Presidents Kennedy and Johnson rallied on behalf of civil rights, but what's left out is the voting record on the historic Civil Rights Act. Turns out "80 percent of the no votes in the Senate came from Democrats, including the late Robert Byrd (W.Va.) and Albert Gore (Tenn.), father of the future vice president," so Republicans teamed up with President Johnson to pass the legislation. President Nixon dismissed black Americans--save for their votes: The film shows Nixon (John Cusack) promoting his upcoming election battle with John F. Kennedy by giving campaign buttons to the butler and his fellow black servers. Later, Nixon talks up black enterprise but only with an eye on winning votes. Moviefone.com notes Nixon's record on school integration outpaced his predecessors, and Allen has spoken fondly of Nixon in press interviews.

Most will never give up the victimhood complex.
They'd don't have to. As for me, I'm fresh out of “white guilt”. They can sit and spin as far as I'm concerned. And if other white folk don't like it, they can kiss me where the sun don't shine.
I'm through with it.
I carried the black flag in my youth after reading The book “Black Like Me” . My mother said I didn't know what I was talking about......she was right.
No black alive today has ever been enslaved.
And no white alive today has ever enslaved a black.
Yet, somehow, blacks remain victims. And whites remain oppressors.
Won’t be going to this movie. But is it the same one with JANE FONDA as Nancy Reagan? THat certainly celebrates the Gipper’s memory. Yeah, too bad I am washing my hair the next few nights and will miss it. LOL
It’s a real shame that the racist director decided to portray lies about Reagan and apartheid, and also about the Butler and the Reagans - portraying him as quitting because he couldn’t stand them, when that is a lie and he was more fond of them than perhaps any other president he served.
I love how suddenly Oprah is running around doing her interviews wearing an Afro, like she’s living in some time warp. She’s trying to increase her street creds with that hairdo. See how black I am? Even though I made my money with a talk show that allegedly reached out to all races. Now she’s blacker than black. What a phony.
What a phoney...talentless racist.
It’s only a stupid movie, and with the bonus of a starring Oprah Winfrey, they’d have to pay me to see it.
Civil rights act
Why do conservatives frigging claim that abomination
It started this decline as sure as a banana peel on a staircase
Voting rights act....

Careful
We have enemies and friends here
It usually happens late at nite when no one is looking.....
The race baiters will provoke you with sympathetic mod in waiting if they can get one
I have seen this played out many times
And Africa was such a free non brutal utopia before they were dragged here
And what makes the color of a slaves skin more special as victims than other slaves
I guess if a butler had to choose a nice place to butle, it would be in the White House...
Weird story of ingratitude and unforgiveness... those things always lead to hell. We used to have a better appreciation of heaven.
Maybe they can blame there box office failures on Americans too. Gee, when was the last time I went out to the movies?
I thank you for the advice.

Don't know, never saw it. BTW reading minds is against the rules on FR.
It’s against the rules on the religion forum not FR as a whole, not that I reckon he actually did so, lol.
All the “low info voters” will see this, consider it factual history and cite it as what REALLY happened in the white house at the time.
“It was in an Oprah movie so it MUST be true!”
Thank you for correcting my misunderstanding.
