The NAACP in Lee County, Florida wants to picket the county over a portrait of General Robert E. Lee that hangs in the commission chambers because they deem displaying Lee's image to be racist. "It's a symbol of racism and division," Lee County NAACP President James Muwakkil said. According to Fox 4, "Muwakkil sent a letter to Lee County commissioners in early July, asking them to take down the portrait, but they voted to keep it up." On Sunday, Muwakkil fired off an email saying, "General Lee did not believe blacks should hold any positions in government." Muwakkil is reportedly "brainstorming with the state NAACP President ways to move forward, which could include a sit-in at the chambers, picketing and protesting." The state NAACP is supporting Muwakkil's efforts.

That’s ridiculous. The county was named for Robert E. Lee. He was an American General and part of our history. The NAACP is off base here. I hope the town stands up to them. I’m moving down to Lee county next year. SW Florida is an awesome slice of paradise.

What is this mukwaykil dude doing about slavery in Yemen and other parts of the world Today? Right now? Answer— nothing, because racist rant and pimping pays more attention to him, and money too, no doubt. He doesn’t give a damn about race except as far as his pimping is paid off. This is true of much of the NAACP, which has eliminated conservative blacks from its ranks.
Robert Lee was a graduate of West Point, second in his class, and Superintendent of West Point in 1852— he trained many leaders in the Union and the Confederacy. He was a hero of the Mexican War.... long before siding with Virginia for his State’s right to be separate in a union of states— the United States. His friends and foes all acknowledged his pure motives, the virtues he maintained in his private life, true Christianity and his stoic loyalty in accepting the defeat at the end and the need for binding up wounds— much like Lincoln.
Lots of people have already given their all in re: the question prior proposed in 1860. And many rights were diluted in the all powerful federal govt. takeover of our States. Rights which we will have to take back if we are to remain free as our Constitution describes. Deo Vindice.
I am so sick of modern “intellectuals” judging historical figures by our modern standards rather than by the standards of the societies in which they lived. By the standards of antebellum America, Lee comes off as very progressive and non-racist. Obviously he would not have advocated seeing blacks hold government positions, but you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would have advocated for that. Even the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction really only advocated electing blacks to Senate and House seats because they saw blacks as a poorly educated voting block beholden to the party who they could likely control and use to win elections.
Lee, however, did oppose the spread of slavery and likely would not have completely opposed gradual abolition. Further, he really was not one of the “fire-eaters” who were dying for secession. He fought the war only reluctantly. Another point about antebellum society: most people considered themselves first and foremost a citizen of the state in which they lived, and only secondarily American citizens. The truth about Lee’s participation in the war is that he fought only after Virginia seceeded and then only because of his loyalty to his state.
Sure, by the race-baiters’ standards, Lee was a flaming racist who fought to keep blacks in chains forever. The truth, however, is much different and more nuanced, something these race-baiting idiots of today cannot comprehend.
