Display of Robert E. Lee Portrait Called Racist by Local NAACP

The NAACP in Lee County, Florida wants to picket the county over a portrait of General Robert E. Lee that hangs in the commission chambers because they deem displaying Lee's image to be racist. "It's a symbol of racism and division," Lee County NAACP President James Muwakkil said. According to Fox 4, "Muwakkil sent a letter to Lee County commissioners in early July, asking them to take down the portrait, but they voted to keep it up." On Sunday, Muwakkil fired off an email saying, "General Lee did not believe blacks should hold any positions in government." Muwakkil is reportedly "brainstorming with the state NAACP President ways to move forward, which could include a sit-in at the chambers, picketing and protesting." The state NAACP is supporting Muwakkil's efforts.

I don’t think either are true.

Lee suggested that he could teach black men to be soldiers, which would be a position in government.

Wilson segregated institutions such as the post office, but he certainly retained and recruited black soldiers in the army which would be a position in the government.

I would suggest that they would both be considered for some positions in government, and opposed to others.

Rightscoop.com posted an article about Lee on the anniversary of his birthday. Your blogger was the first person to comment (probably does regular searches for mention of Lee, so he can jump in). The guy was raving like a loon.

I recommend you read Pryor’s book, written after the Lee family gave her access to Lee’s papers.

Quite the opposite...I believe the civil war was the first assault on the bill of rights aimed specifically at the 10th amendment. I believe if the civil war had been delayed by another 10 years natural economics would have taken care of the slavery issue without an all out assault on the 10th.
