WORKERS have fled New Zealand's capital, Wellington, after a severe earthquake measuring a magnitude of 6.6 rocked the nation.
New Zealanders huddled under desks as strong tremors struck the country -- as far north as Auckland and as far south as Dunedin -- at around 2:31pm local time.
There were a number of injuries from broken glass but no serious casualties have been reported.
Earthquakes damaged houses and there were reports of a home almost totally collapsing in Marlborough on the South Island.

Watching live news coverage (Australia and NZ share 24 hours news resources) - does not look too bad in terms of casualties and damage.
Earthquake postingss here at FR have been pretty rare lately.
I used to go to the USG earthquake maps daily till they changed the format. Haven’t gone there in a long time.
Bump

Are you signed up with the earthquake notification system?
I get an email whenever there is an earthquake anywhere.

Here’s a link to their “Beta” site.

The old format was mush better IMO.
Oh great. My wife is flying there on Tuesday.
Seems very shallow (2 km) and there’s still large afters. We’ll see, I guess.
I’m not signed up. I guess I should but I liked watching the trends of all recent quakes on one map. I liked the old maps where one click got the map I wanted. Getting a similar picture now takes multiple key strokes working through the system. Just got tired of it.
Last time this happened didn’t the ground liquify?
Hope all is well.
Please check in?
I hate the new format but do watch this...

updates every minute. Still doesn’t hold a candle to the old format. I’ve complained often but we don’t count I guess!
Yeah. The new USGSearthquake interface sucks.
Hope this is a isolated event and your wife has no problems.
I hate it too!
I do follow this one and I’m a avid watcher of our local live ABC KABC NEWS CAM...

I signed up just after we experienced a minor quake here a few years ago. It was on Negros, the island next to me (Cebu).
For me it was an interesting curiosity, with only a minor tremor, and a small crack in a concrete post.
It did, however, kill a small number over on that island, but with the population of very poor here, it does not take much to cause fatalities.
A small typhoon this week killed several in the northern Philippines.
I also wrote to the Tsunami warning center, asking about the possibility of a tsunami hitting my beach. They replied that they were swamped with emails but would get back to me. They never did.
I am not so worried as I am not exposed to the open Pacific.
There are large islands that sit between Cebu and the open ocean.
