Turning off the ignition could cause steering wheel to lock, resulting in a car you can't steer. Putting car into neutral is best option, or if to turn key off be sure to turn key back on a notch or two to override steering wheel lock.
Think 'neutral' first and foremost (Clutch pushed for sticks, of course)!
