U.S.-born Junnyor Diaz studies at a Phoenix high school. His Mexico-born older brother, Edder, has applied for a program to avoid deportation, while their undocumented mother, Angelica, cleans houses to keep the family fed and, above all, together.
For Junnyor and 16 million others like him in mixed-status families, reform could bring stability to a fraught situation in which a U.S.-born child is a citizen with a shot at a university education and a stable working life, while a sibling or parent born abroad can face instability and deportation.
"There isn't a day that goes by that I don't worry for either my brother or my mother," said Junnyor, a basketball-loving 16-year-old whose childhood in Phoenix has been filled with anxiety. "I just want it to go away."
While the Senate passed an immigration overhaul, House Republicans are divided over the granting of legal status to those in the country illegally, a step many see as rewarding lawbreakers.
With the fate of the legislation now uncertain, the Diaz family remains hopeful for even incremental changes to the immigration system. After a lifetime of uncertainty, Junnyor is impatient to put the travails of mixed status behind them.
"It's not just me, there's millions of families across the nation who just hope that this whole thing just goes away."

“Mixed status”. Well, that’s shorter than “two illegals and an anchor”
but it’s still a stinkin’ euphemism.
What’s stopping them from all being together in Mexico??
Once they are given legal status perhaps in addition for paying for them we could, you know, pay some reparations to help smooth things over.?.
“It’s not just me, there’s millions of families across the nation who just hope that this whole thing just goes away.”
It’s not just me, there’s millions of families across the nation who just hope that ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS just go away.
Some casual observers may have noticed the peculiar similarity between the methods and tactics of the muslims and those of the mexican invaders flooding into the US. Spain was ruled by muslims for some 700 years, and in that time they absorbed the muslim ways which included murder, pillage, and laying waste to any resistance that stood in their way. Even after the muslim expulsion of the 15’th century, these practices were well established, and the conquistadors brought this disturbing cultural trait to the new world but now with a cross instead of a koran, and we are now experiencing their degenerate legacy full flower. So it’s no coincidence we see the same savagery and brutality from Mexico that we see in the muslim world.
Take ALL your asses back to Meh-hee-ko where you can all be together legally. It's not our problem that you chose to break the law and end up in your situation.
F you, GET THE F OUT!
I do not understand how anyone can think it is the obligation of citizens that citizens of other countries chose to break our laws and live and work/not work here illegally. If you are a child of illegal aliens I do have some sympathy for you that your parents put you in a bad situation. However that does not mean I have or should have any responsibility to you or your family.
I am not responsible for their ‘mixed status’.
Pretty simple.
Gawd forbid someone have "anxiety" for breaking US immigration law. Sheesh, I have "anxiety" every time my wife goes to work on the Hwy full of uninsured illegal aliens. I have "anxiety" every time I pay my bills. I have "anxiety" every day while watching my liberty and Country slipping away.
Guess it should join the actionable offenses like, "discrimination (which we all do when deciding which groceries to purchase or vendor to hire), offended, inadvertently touched, and now defending ourselves against a punk thug".
I couldn't care less about any illegal alien's "anxiety". They should contact their local Social Services Office and get a script for Xanax or go back where their parents came from. Pfft!
Then I see the illegals who are demanding all kinds of special consideration and pay nothing in return, Don't give me this humane crap. If you are illegal I don't give a damn. Look at all of the Legal immigrants you are screwing because you are nothing more than a bunch of selfish pricks.
If the Republicans didn't the message in 2012 there will be hell to pay in 2014 if they ignore their base again. To paraphrase Mark Levin "We should only reach out to democrats only so far as to smack them besides their heads" To the GOP, knock if off...grow a pair or leave.
Why does this dumb Reuter’s writer think that a university degree leads to a job these days? One third of university graduates are jobless and living with their parents. Is Junnyor contemplating cashing in on his minority status? Lots of luck, since Hispanics will soon be in the majority in many states, and he will be just another guy with a misspelled name looking for work.
I have a solution to your US caused "anxiety" : You all move back to where ever your mother came from and build a life there. I hear Mexico's economy is doing quite well and its unemployment is less than the US. I'll buy you, your mother and brother a one-way ticket.
The same goes for any European illegals who over-stay their visas, not to mention Canadian border jumpers. Need I mention more from different continents so you don't whine "racist"? Sure you will anyway since I mentioned Mexico.
In the spirit of harmony and love I am prepared to be magnanimous. We must stop separating families who have a member who was born here, while the parents were born in Mexico, or other places where from the illegals flock. Let us simply deport the whole family back to their native country and send the U.S. born member with them so they can all be together.
Then I see the illegals who are demanding all kinds of special consideration and pay nothing in return, Don't give me this humane crap. If you are illegal I don't give a damn. Look at all of the Legal immigrants you are screwing because you are nothing more than a bunch of selfish pricks.
Exactly right.
My Filipino, Argentinian, Brazilian, Venezuelan, Indian friends obeyed the law, WHY CAN'T MEXICANS?
And it IS Mexicans who are the problem.
