If it was 20 miles to the grocery store you would drive too but you would do it once a month like I do.

Grocery is about 10 miles for me now and I go about every two weeks. As I said, distance and terrain rule.
I rode the subway pretty much daily from Sept. 1958 to July 1999...but the stop was a good 15 minute walk from my home. (only uphill one way) I worked as a field tech in lower Manhattan for 20 years and walked EVERYWHERE from Canal St. to the Battery.
Today, the only places I walk to (off my property) are one next door neighbor (about 150 yds) and my neighbor across the road....EVERYWHERE else I drive. That, plus the fact that I used to live on the top floor of a five story walk-up, is what I attribute my weight gain since moving here.
I've recently been trying to walk more, but the hills just kill me, so I DRIVE to the level walking path in town by the river. (LOL)
