Americans live in places other than just an urban inner city where mass transit is the most cost effective transport.
Actually, in some places, even if you live in the suburbs mass transit is optimal. When I was on sabbatical at U.Penn. I took the SEPTA train in every day to get to the university from Media, where I was living. When I’m home in Kansas, the notion of using mass transit for anything is absurd.
