Actually, Rush is wrong - Palin never said that, Tina Fey said it in an SNL skit. What Palin said was, "There are places in Alaska [the far-western Aleutians] where you can see Alaska." She never said she could see it from her porch, because you can't see it from there. Palin was just trying to make kind of a folksy point that whereas for people in Kansas - for example - Russia seems far off, there are places in Alaska where you can actually see it.

She was asked to identify things that would enhance her foreign policy experience.
Even without the Tina Fey revision, it was a poor ("folksy") answer to a serious question.
